Character Design: final concepts

Here are my final concept art for all three of my characters. Quite happy with the way they turned out.

Character expression sheets

Here are my expression sheets for all three characters I really struggled with these their quite difficult to do and out of this whole project they are my least favourite things. My villain was a particularly big problem as there's not much of his face that can move except his jaw. So I was quite limited in his expressions and in the end I could only really come up with three.

Updated Sidekick turnaround

On Justin's advice I made a few minor changes to my sidekick to enforce the possessed aspect to him, and introduce a more asymmetrical aspect to him. Also I decreased the width of his body to be in proportion to the rest of him.

Character design: Villain development and turn around

I did a few more sketches of my villain just to make sure I knew what I was doing when it came to making his turn around.

Character Design: Sidekick development

Since my sidekick is my hero's brother I used my hero to design him. I've kept them very similar and changed the the nose mostly. I then started to think about how he will look when the villain posses him. It's quite difficult to show the way he is going to look without colour so the sketches were just to help me figure out some things. His eyes are going to be the same as the villains, not in shape but in colour. He will have veins spider-webbing over his skin coming from his temples and neck and they will spread over his body. he will have gaunt cheeks and chapped lips etc..

Below is some options for my sidekicks hair, I didn't add on all the extras onto his face since I just wanted to figure out his hair. I'm thinking of going for number 5.

Below is just an outline of what my sidekick will look like, When I do the final concept art for him is when I'll be adding all the colour and shading details to him. This shows what his clothes and the colour of them will be. I took his clothing design from the sheet I did for my hero since they are from the same tribe and brothers I wanted them to be wearing similar things.

Below is my sidekicks turnaround from the side you can see his spine sticking out from his back a lot more than a human spine should this is one of the areas that the villain that is possessing him shows through along with his eyes etc..

Character design: Hero development

Here is my hero development so far. I did a few experiments as to what type of hair and clothes I wanted, and then did some quick colour variations with the clothes so I could decide what colours Ill be using for him. I preferred quite neutral colours.

Villain Progress

I thought I would give drawing my villain in 3/4 view a go and try and connect it to the rest of the body. Below is the result, I'm quite happy with it the body is slightly out of proportion but as a first attempt I'm pleased with it.

Character Design: Villain development

After struggling with my villain character quite a lot over the past few days I think I finally have a design for him. I need to draw him out fully now but I think most of the designing is done for him and I can go back to focusing on my hero and sidekick.

Hero and Villain development

Here is my progress so far with my hero and villain. I'm struggling quite a lot with my villain I know what I want his body to look like but his head is still a bit up in the air. I think the only way to get round it is I'm just going to have to keep drawing him till I come up with something I like, so I decided to leave him for the time being and move onto my hero. I pretty much have him figured out I just need to give him some hair so that I can refine his features a little more, at his moment his nose might be slightly to wide.

Character Design Lesson

On our last character design lesson we were put into groups and then given various tasks we had to complete in a certain amount of time as well as between the group designing 6 characters.
Below are the two characters I designed Gork and Boltz.

Below is the environment I designed for the evil doctors laboratory.

Here are the logos we designed.

Character Lesson

For our character design lesson today we looked at how characters are designed and the shapes that are involved in making them. Todays lesson was really interesting and I think I learnt quite a lot that will be very useful in creating my own characters. In the lesson we were given each given a character and then asked to re-draw it but simplifying it into the basic shapes that make it up. After that we were asked to make subtle changes to the shapes to see how it would affect the character.
My character was danger mouse. The first page shows my simplified drawing of danger mouse and his basic shapes and then the smaller drawings on the side and the second page were my attempts at making changes to those shapes.

Our next task was to bring in some character concept art that we like and a style that we would be trying to achieve in our own project. We were then asked to re-draw this character, but in a different style. So if the original was realistic we had to simplify it, if it was simple then you had to make it realistic. My image was quite realistic and below is my image as well as my attempts to make it simple.
